Modern Warfare 4 is introducing a brand-new multiplayer mode called Collateral. The devs describe it as “designed for fans of Search and Destroy and those from the more competitive community,” but its structure clearly mirrors the economy-driven rounds seen in Counter-Strike and Valorant.
How Collateral Works
Collateral pits two teams against each other on a map with two bomb sites. Teams alternate between attacking and defending, and every player has only one life per round. Unlike traditional Call of Duty modes, players do not enter with custom loadouts. Everyone spawns with a pistol and must earn cash by eliminating enemies and playing the objective.
The currency carries over from round to round, allowing teams to save for more powerful weapons or utility later in the match. Between rounds, players can purchase primary weapons, armor, Perks, and items such as Flash Grenades, Molotov Cocktails, Stims, Riot Shields, and a Smoke Wall. Dying means losing all purchases for that round, so surviving becomes as important as completing objectives.
Infinity Ward has also shown a Team Buy option for a UAV, suggesting squads can pool resources to unlock a Scorestreak. Exact mechanics of team purchases and the broader economy will be revealed closer to launch.
Stripped-Back Call of Duty
Collateral removes several series staples: respawns are disabled, Killstreaks are gone, automatic health regeneration is removed, and the custom loadout system is off the table.
What Happens Next
More details on Collateral’s economy and match structure will be released ahead of Modern Warfare 4’s launch. Infinity Ward has also confirmed that the divisive Shipment map will return and that it will not address Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM) despite backlash.
